El activismo social de Marisela Escobedo Ortiz comenzó en 2008 en Ciudad Juárez tras el asesinato de su hija Rubí Frayre, de 16 años. Escobedo y su marido afirmaron que su hija había sido asesinada por Sergio Rafael Barraza Bocanegra. Consiguieron localizar a Barraza en Fresnillo, Zacatecas, donde fue detenido y trasladado a Juárez, donde confesó el crimen ante el tribunal y relató el entierro de los restos de Rubí. Sin embargo, Barraza fue absuelto por los jueces por falta de pruebas y quedó en libertad, generando así un escándalo que se dio a conocer a nivel nacional e internacional[4].

En respuesta, Escobedo inició una serie de protestas contra la resolución en contra de las autoridades del estado de Chihuahua, pidiendo que Barraza fuera detenido y juzgado de nuevo, apelando la decisión. Un tribunal de circuito revocó la absolución y Barraza fue condenado por asesinato, mientras Barraza seguía prófugo de la justicia. Tras numerosas gestiones ante los gobernadores José Reyes Baeza Terrazas y César Duarte Jáquez, trasladaron su protesta a la Plaza Hidalgo de la ciudad de Chihuahua, frente al Palacio de Gobierno, residencia del gobernador, donde el 16 de diciembre de 2010 Escobedo fue asesinado por un desconocido de un solo disparo en la cabeza[5][6][7].
